Floor Plan Design TUTORIAL

About this tutorial:

Video duration: 8:37
In this design tutorial I’ll show you how I develop and sketch floor plan ideas quickly. From diagram to rough sketch and on to more formalized plan layouts, you can follow along as I show you everything you need to draw a floor plan using one of our new residential projects as an example.
I discuss in detail:
– why you should start with diagrams (and not floor plans)
– information you’ll need before drawing
– tools I use and recommend
– tips for developing better ideas
– form, space, and order (of course)
– using grids
– scale
– and what I listen to when designing…

So you said to send you our ideas in the comments below.

So, I have a request for your future videos.

How did you become an architect?

    What schools did you attend?

Did your start out drawing buildings as a kid in old sketchbooks from your past?

Do you have your old drawings?

Make a video on how YOU became an architect and what inspired you to draw building plans for a living.

    Just an idea!

    Love your videos!

Thank you for all of the videos you have posted! They are really useful for me as an architecture student. Especially when I found out a lot of technics have to be learnt by myself. Sometimes the teachers don't even mention how to learn and practice those technics in class. But finally, it turns out they are really important in the design process. Your videos are really good tutorials for me to make improvements. And they also give me lots of inspiration for architecture and design! Cheers!

any pens, pencils, markers or whatever tool is handy not to stop the flow of the design process. The media is not important to me, sometimes is one, next time is something different. I've been doing it like this for over 25 years 🙂
I particularly love the easiness of working with red Col-Erase, I can work, erase, re-work ove the same diagram or sketch with the advantage that remains pretty clean

30X40, I am a public school teacher (middle school) and wanted to do a unit on architecture. We currently have drafting boards, Google SketchUp for 3D modeling, etc. I was wondering if you knew of a place to get documents like the site plan you use in this video. Thanks, Brandon Teel

I'm currently using a range of Micron pens, including a brushtip. I also keep a grey set of prismacolor double heads. I'm back and forth between those and a set of Copic dualtip markers.

Hello, I'm an architecture student at an advanced architectural drafting class. I'm a third-first place medalist in Arizona for SkillsUSA. Right now, I'm attending the National Home Association Builders secondary program competition. I see your plot plan (site plan) very advanced. The problem statement was given to us and gave us a location that's not specific. Your site plan seemed quite advanced. If you're willing to help me figure out how to find certain landmarks, land elevation, plumbing, and approve my drawings for a very important competition that would be awesome. Pretty much help me with the study of the site plan. Obviously, I will put your credits and you would be able to see who approved which drawing. If you seem interested in helping, please comment back so I can give you my e-mail. thanks!

What if I have a design and there ends up being a code that says I can’t design a particular room that way? Can I still try and stick to the same alternative design of the house and only redesign the room or will that whole house or section of the house have to be redesigned?
