In Windows 10 you may receive the following message in the window of a dialog box:

Close programs to prevent information loss.
Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs: ~program name(s)~
[Close program] [Cancel]
Window will only close enough programs to restore needed memory.

The most common solution to this issue is to increase the amount of virtual memory available to your system by adjusting the size of your pagefile. This video show you the steps to take to do that …

    Ultimately this is just moving the goal posts. The main cause of this issue is when the virtual memory page file is full. Increasing the size will work temporarily but once it fills up again, the error will come back.

    Permanent solution is to enable ClearPageFileAtShutdown in the registry. This way, each time you shut the PC down it will clear the virtual memory 🙂

    Run -> regedit.exe -> Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory

    If ClearPageFileAtShutdown key doesn't exist, simply add it. Set the value to 1. Save, restart the PC.

    Just to note, a potential negative side-effect of using this setting is a slower shutdown time (since Windows is clearing the virtual memory page file).

    So I just kept hitting close program or cancel. My laptop will boot up now but if the icons and dock even appear I cannot click on anything or type commands but I can move the mouse? Do you think my laptop is Dunbar?

    Made these changes, exactly as detailed in the tutorial and using the same numbers as I also have 8gb of RAM. "Low Memory" error has gone away, but now on startup programs load extremely slowly. Opening shortcuts on the desktop would usually be immediate, now they take about 3-5 minutes to open, same goes for autorun-at-startup programs. Icon pictures also take as long to show up and replace the default icons on the desktop. The only way to fix this issue now seems to be reverting to checking the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" option. Manually setting the size to lesser amounts does not fix the problem as I've set it to 8 gb (8192mb, min and max), same goes for setting it to "system managed size" and "No paging file". What went wrong?
